Orthodox Primate of Canada and All North America to deliver address to the public in Victoria, B.C.
Metropolitan Jonah Paffhausen’s keynote address will be open to the public, at the 2010 Canadian Archdiocesan Assembly of the Orthodox Church in America.

Victoria, BC: June 24, 2010 – Orthodox Outreach is the theme of the 2010 Canadian Archdiocesan Assembly of the Orthodox Church in America. The focus of the assembly is directed specifically at social justice initiatives. Orthodox clergy, delegates and observers from across Canada and the United States will be in attendance.

A highlight of this tri-annual conference will be a public address by Metropolitan Jonah Paffhausen, Primate of Canada and All North America of the autocephalous Orthodox Church in America. The Metropolitan’s address is open to the public and free.

Metropolitan Jonah is a signatory to the November 2009 Manhattan Declaration, an ecumenical statement in defense of the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, and religious liberty. The declaration encourages Christians not to comply with rules and laws that force them to oppose their religious consciences.

The Metropolitan’s address is scheduled for Tuesday July 27, 2010 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm, in Room B150, Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science (Bob Wright) Building, University of Victoria, Victoria, BC.

More information is available through Fr. Kaleeg Hainsworth, Rector of All Saints of Alaska Orthodox Church in Victoria, BC, and through the Assembly website.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Registration Open for the 2010 Assembly!
“When did we see You?”  This question posed to Christ in one of His parables (Matt. 25:31-46) is the theme phrase of the Assembly to be held in Victoria, BC by the Canadian Archdiocese of the Orthodox Church in America, from July 26 to 30, 2010.  Hosted at the University of Victoria, the Triennial Assembly lectures and workshops will focus on opportunities for service to homeless and afflicted people in Canadian neighbourhoods.

The Assembly will bring together His Beatitude Metropolitan Jonah, Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, His Eminence Archbishop  Seraphim, Archbishop of Ottawa and all of Canada, and over two hundred priests, deacons, youth, lay delegates and observers from parishes throughout Canada and the US.  Special highlights of the Assembly will include a Keynote address by Metropolitan Jonah, several distinguished speakers including Dr. Gabor Mate and Fr. Justin Matthews, interactive and practical workshops, a full youth schedule and optional evening activities including a coffee house and fellowship dinner.

Registration and more detailed information is now available online at the Assembly website: www.orthodoxassembly.ca.  Observers and delegates should register by March 1st, 2010 to ensure a registration fee of $200.  The fee increases to $225 after March 1st. Youth ages 13-18 and clergy wives qualify for a subsidized fee of $100.  Fees include daytime activities and several meals for the week.  Bookings for affordable accommodations are available at the University campus in January 2010, and can be booked directly through the University (details online).  A group booking code and 10% discount has also been secured through WestJet.  Registering by March 1st will secure a spot for the Assembly at the reduced rate and also ensure accommodations and flights are available, as Victoria is a very popular tourist destination in the summer.

The Archdiocesan Assembly is an event that happens every three years in Canada, and serves to gather hundreds of lay delegates, observers, youth, and clergy from all over the country in celebrating the Liturgy, conducting plenary sessions to look after the administration of the archdiocese, and inspiring and edifying those in attendance through guest speakers, fellowship, and special events.
